Your First Baby Shopping List

The Bedroom

  • A Cot - We recommend the ones with adjustable heights, they will save your backs a whole lot of pain as you bring baby to your height, rather than bending down everytime you put her down or pick her up..
  • A Mattress for the Cot
  • A Mattress Protector
  • A Minimum of 2 Sheet Sets
  • At least 1 Cot Blanket
  • Bunny Rugs - You'll be surprised how many you use.
  • A Change Table With a Mattress - These can come with additional storage, or a built in bath. They can be very handy, depending on the amount of space you have at home
  • (Optional) A Cradle - These an be expensive and are not really necessary given the flexibility of cots these days
  • A Portable Cot
  • A Mattress for the Portable Cot

Bathing

  • A Bath - These come desined to support your baby, which really makes bathing easier when you don't have a lot of confidence in the beginning
  • Facewashers - Get as many as you can
  • Baby Towels
  • Baby Shampoo
  • Bath Wash
  • Moisturiser

 

Feeding

  • An Espressor - Only buy this after the birth as it may not be required
  • Bottles with Newborn Teets
  • Dummies
  • A Steralising Unit
  • Lots and Lots of Bibs

 

Clothing

  • Start everything at size 0000 or 000. Size "Newborn" can still be pretty big
  • Singlets
  • Jumpsuits
  • Socks
  • Booties
  • Mittens (if required in colder areas)

 

General/Other

  • Car Seat - Make sure your safety seat complies with the safety standards of you home.
  • Pram/Pusher - Today's prams are great, they are built to suit your lifestyle. So make sure you think about yourselves when buying a pram. Ie. If your are an active couple, get a jogging pram. Some come with basinets if you want your baby to sleep in the pram on day trips or weekends away. Others come with nappy bags. Have a look around and pick one that really suits the life you want with your children.
